In the last series I shared with you the first principle of Holistic health; Bio-Individuality and how working with it you can make positive changes based on your unique health requirements.

The second principle of Holistic health / skin care is Primary and Secondary Nourishment.

So what is Primary Nourishment?

Primary nourishment/ food is more than what we put on our plate. Healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career and a spiritual practice can fulfil our soul and satisfy our hunger for life. When these core areas of your lives are balanced & satiating, your life feeds you, making what you eat secondary.

Walking in nature, yoga, love of family, laughter with friends, acknowledgment & satisfaction from our careers are all examples of things we love that make us happy.

Sometimes we are nourished by the energy in our lives. We hunger for play, fun, touch, romance, love, achievement, success, art, music, self expression, leadership excitement, adventure and spirituality. All these lifestyle factors are essential forms of nourishment. The extent to which we are able to incorporate them determines how happy and worthwhile our lives feel.

Since our skin is a part of the whole, our happiness and satisfaction with life, reflects directly on it.

Secondary Nourishment:

It is a scientifically proven fact that our food choices affect our overall health and our skin. The old saying, we are what we eat, is true. Every cell in our body was created from the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Since, there is no specific diet that works for all; (keeping Bio-Individuality in mind) here are a few general guidelines to a healthy body and glowing skin.

Drink more water

Keeping yourself hydrated is cardinal for your skin and body, especially in the hot summer months.

Eat Whole foods

  • Whole foods are foods that are as nature intended it to be. Unprocessed and unrefined, before being consumed.
  • These include unprocessed fruit and vegetables, whole grains (millet, brown rice, oats, rye, whole wheat, buckwheat, quinoa, beans and legumes (including lentils, chickpeas and kidney beans) and nuts and seeds.
  • Whole foods contain a wide variety of nutrients in one food. These nutrients include vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, essential fatty acids and fibre.
  • Choose fresh, natural, organic, local, seasonal, unrefined and unprocessed foods

Eat more Plant based food

  • Plant based foods help your body get the key micronutrients it needs to function at its best.
  • Reconfigure your meals so that the majority of your plate contains raw and cooked vegetables, fruits, legumes and beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains
  • Beans, nuts and legumes are great sources of plant-based protein.

Choose healthy fat

  • Believe it or not, fat is part of a healthy diet – but only if it’s the right kind.
  • Minimize (or eliminate) the amounts of refined oils and processed fats you cook with on a daily basis. Instead choose filtered, unrefined and cold pressed.
  • Nuts, seeds and avocados (all plant-based whole foods) are great micronutrient-dense sources of healthy fats.

Consider Nutrient Density

  • A variety of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are essential for good health. While only needed in small amounts, they play important roles in human development and well-being.
  • Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables along with all kinds of whole grains, beans and other unrefined whole plant foods to get the most out of your diet.

Clean your plate

Avoid or Eliminate Processed, refined, packaged food, aerated drinks, artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, sweeteners and hydrogenated fats from your diet.

Following these basic guidelines will make you feel balanced, energetic and vibrant in a short time.

Primary and secondary nourishment/foods complement each other. You will notice that when you are satiated with Primary nourishment, you will naturally make better food choices and if you make improvements in your diet, it will reflect in the positive choices you make in life. It’s a win-win!!
