10 Skin Care Tips in Monsoons

The rains are here, and summer heat is taking a back seat, making way for the rains to cool down the temperature. For you to enjoy this monsoon season thoroughly, you need to take care of your skin and hair to stay away from problems that you could face in the monsoon weather due to dampness, chillness, wetness and rain on the cards.

Here are some simple do’s and don’ts for you to take care of your skin this monsoon season so that you are able to smile through it while enjoying rains thoroughly!

Simple do’s and don’ts for monsoon skin care

  1. Keep your skin dry: Getting wet is very common in the monsoon season. However, you need to take care to dry yourself and ensure that there is no dampness in skin folds, scalp and feet so that they do not become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi.
  2. Avoid hot showers: Hot showers and a steam bath sound inviting in the monsoon season. However, they tend to remove moisture and damage delicate facial skin. Hence, it is important that you take bath and shower in lukewarm or tepid water.
  3. Deep cleansing is a must: Many people tend to feel sticky and oily during the monsoon season. Though using wipes could be a quick solution, it is definitely not a permanent one. Make it a point to follow deep cleansing routines like washing your face regularly and following a strict shampoo & conditioning routine to avoid bacterial growth and skin break-outs.
  4. Continue to use sun protection: Many people carry the misconception that sun protection is needed only in summer. In reality, in monsoon and winter season you need to continue to use anti-tan and sunscreen lotions since the sun is still beating down and you might not even sense it that much because of the lack of heat.
  5. Eat healthy: Going on a crash diet and low-fat options could actually back fire during monsoon season. Oily fish, eggs, flax seeds, walnuts and dark green vegetables contain essential fatty acids that are needed for proper skin repair mechanism and flexibility. Strictly avoid spicy and oily food.
  6. Say no to coffee, alcohol & smoking: Consuming increasing amounts of coffee & alcohol removes moisture from the skin and also leads to faster wrinkling. Coffee also aggravates acidity. As for smoking, we all know how it can destroy the body and our skin & hair are no less affected. But if further contributes to dehydration during monsoons and must be avoided.
  7. Drink plenty of water: Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day is essential to keep your skin hydrated and prevent skin problems by eliminating toxins. It is especially important during monsoons due to the constant sweating that leads to dehydration.
  8. Avoid alcohol-based skin products: Many soaps, cleansers and lotions contain alcohol derivatives that irritate skin and also leave it dry. Opt for organic alternatives that will effectively cleanse your skin by removing dust and grime while keeping your skin moisturized and free of bacterial infections at the same time.
  9. Amazing Amla: Amla has cooling effect and helps detoxify liver and improve digestion that is required during the monsoon season. You can also include amla in your skin care and hair care regimes.
  10. Take mild laxatives: In the monsoon season, the bowel movement could easily get disturbed which will ultimately show on your skin. Take some raisins, figs, prunes or triphala powder which are mild and help to set right bowel movements by flushing out toxins and wastes from the body. Ensuring proper digestion is very important in order to have healthy skin.

Try these simple tips this monsoon season and enjoy the rains without having to face hassles from skin problems.
